Located in southern New Mexico, situated in the Tularosa Basin, lies the White Sands National Monument. Covering 275 square miles, these are the largest gypsum dunes in the world. Gypsum is rarely found as sand because it is water soluble, but since the basin is enclosed the gypsum is trapped there. The dunes were recognized as a National Monument in 1936.
